CBS has reversed its decision to cancel SWAT just days after it was canceled. Season 7 will take place, and it will be the series’ final season. The weekend brought some bad news. S.W.A.T. was canceled by CBS on Friday, despite the fact that its overall viewership has increased year over year. 6.8 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating have been the season 6 averages.
Shemar Moore, who has joined as an executive producer for the last season, reacted angrily to the cancellation announcement, saying “it makes no sense” and adding: “I don’t think we’re done. CBS is either gonna wake up and realize they made a mistake. Sony is gonna do their math and realize that this is not the right move.”
And of course Monday brought us good news. It turns out that fans speaking out against the cancellation of a top show can help with the reversal of a decision. CBS Network on Monday formally reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., handing the long-running procedural a 13-episode renewal for a seventh and final season. CBS’ U-turn began emerging Monday afternoon, only three days after it canceled the Shemar Moore-led drama.

“We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T. and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year.”Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, and Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, stated in a joint statement.
“S.W.A.T. has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show’s storylines and characters, which audiences deserve. Once again, we appreciate the talents and efforts of the cast, writers, producers and crew and everyone who has contributed to the success of S.W.A.T. We look forward to its return next season.”

SWAT Season 7 is now officially happening. Only a few minutes after CBS officially announced that it had reversed course and renewed the long-running procedural for a seventh and final season with 13 episodes, Shemar Moore took to social media late Monday to bask in the win. “We did it S.W.A.T. fam!,” the actor wrote in an Instagram story. In a subsequent post, he added, “Thank you to all the fans for the continued and amazing support.”
CBS had already confirmed that it was the outpouring support from fans that led to the reversal of the decision, and Moore recognized that immediately. Of course, there is a little bit of bad news with this good news. SWAT Season 7 is going to be the last.
The announcement that the final season would only have 13 episodes came along with CBS’s decision to reverse the cancellation. To ensure that the people and storylines have some resolution, it was decided to bring it back. We have to mention that we concur with Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, and Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, who both stated that the public deserves the conclusion.
Of course, this will cause a delay in the writing process. Nothing can happen on the series until the WGA writers strike is done because it is still going on. It might be a factor in the decision to air a final season with 13 episodes. Without too much difficulty, this could air in the middle of the television season.
The final season will air in the 2023-2024 season. At least we can now go into the final two episodes without worrying about any cliffhangers or a lack of closure.
