Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie,” which debuted in theaters three weeks ago, has exceeded $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, a record-breaking feat for the movie business.
The fact that “Barbie” is the first film ever to be directed completely by a woman and accomplish this astounding box office milestone marks a historic moment.
Leading the charge in this cinematic triumph are the talented actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who bring the iconic characters of Barbie and Ken to life. Together, they embark on a captivating journey of self-discovery after being expelled from the utopian Barbie Land, captivating audiences worldwide.
“Barbie” now stands as the second highest-grossing movie of the year (2023), trailing only behind “The Super Mario Bros,” which took the box office by storm when it was released in April, amassing a staggering $1.357 billion in ticket sales.
With a worldwide total of more than $800 million in 2017, Gerwig’s previous film, “Wonder Woman,” had significantly raised the bar for female directors. Gerwig is currently the undisputed box office monarch among female directors after “Barbie” surpassed the $1 billion mark.
The film contains some of the world’s most famous actors – Ryan Gosling, Helen Mirren, Issa Rae and the new Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa.
And if that wasn’t enough, the soundtrack has been produced by Mark Ronson and includes tracks from the likes of Dua Lipa, Tame Impala, and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice who’ve combined to sample the original Barbie Girl by Aqua.
