SZA has opened up about her decision to prioritize her health and have her breast implants removed.

The singer, 34, says that a high risk for breast cancer is the reason during an episode of “SHE MDpodcast, hosted by former fashion designer and entrepreneur Mary Alice Haney and board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Thais Aliabadi, who’s known for working with stars like Rihanna and Khloe Kardashian.

She said she eventually had the implants removed because she “didn’t feel good, and it was painful,” explaining, “I got way too much scar tissue because my breasts are too dense and I’m not supposed to have breast implants. And I ended up getting extra fibrosis.”

“With my risk of breast cancer and then with the actual –I have markers in my breast, metal markers in my breast for the fibrosis for these lumps or whatever, I’m not supposed to be getting breast implants.”

SZA said her mother was previously diagnosed with breast cancer, and aunt also had a mastecomy. After getting plastic surgery, SZA learned she had a 53% percent lifetime risk of developing the disease because of her family history.

SZA also mentioned that she has dense breasts (which refers to having more of certain kinds of tissue in your boobs than others), and this is also associated with a much greater risk of breast cancer, in part because this tissue can make it harder to spot concerning changes on a mammogram.

SZA admitted that she was supposed to see Dr. Aliabadi before she got her implants due to her higher risk of breast cancer but the singer “snuck and got it anyways.”

SZA said that her breast implants “ended up hurting me”—but after getting them removed, she’s much feeling better.

“So basically, I put them in. They ended up hurting me,” she said. “I got way too much scar tissue because my breasts are too dense and I’m not supposed to have breast implants. And so I ended up getting extra fibrosis like with tissue, whatever, and I didn’t feel good and it was painful. So, I took them out, and now, they’re just my boobs.”
