In a recent interview on CNN’s African Voices this weekend, Ghanaian Afropop and highlife singer Wendy Shay eloquently expressed the profound significance she places on connecting with her devoted fanbase.
Shay, whose captivating blend of Afrobeats and R&B has rapidly catapulted her to stardom across the Ghanaian market, passionately conveyed that her fans are not merely passive listeners, but an integral part of her artistic identity and journey.
“They are a part of me, and I’m a part of them” Shay declared, underscoring the deep, symbiotic relationship she has cultivated with the legions of admirers who have championed her meteoric rise.
The singer went on to explain that interacting with her fans, not only them (her fans) listening to her music, but from live performances, or personal encounters, fuels her creative spirit and provides invaluable validation. She described the electrifying feeling of them them (her fans) also getting the opportunity to connect with her and feel their artist they’ve been listening.
‘The only thing that is between us is the music that connects our souls. But I feel like there should be a physical connection as well, so when I come to see my fans outskirts and far places or long distances, it just gives me the opportunity to come into contact with my fans, those who stream my song.”
Shay emphasized that this special bond is a two-way street, as her fans’ unwavering loyalty and support have been instrumental in propelling her success.
In an industry often characterized by fleeting fame, Wendy Shay’s steadfast commitment to maintaining a genuine, authentic connection with “her people” as she affectionately calls them, has emerged as a key pillar of her artistry – one that not only nourishes her soul, but promises to sustain her rise as a true African music icon.
