Taraji P. Henson stars as Janiyah, a struggling single mother, in Tyler Perry’s upcoming Netflix thriller Straw, set to premiere on June 6, 2025.

The film follows Janiyah as she becomes entangled in a chaotic conspiracy while trying to care for her sick daughter. Wrongfully accused of a bank robbery, she finds herself at the center of suspicion in a world that seems indifferent to her existence.

Henson drew on her own experiences as a single mother to portray Janiyah, emphasizing the film’s relevance in showcasing how vulnerable individuals can be neglected or misjudged by the systems meant to protect them.  The cast also includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, and Rockmond Dunbar.

However, Straw has faced criticism for perpetuating a recurring theme in Perry’s films that depict the struggles of single Black mothers. Critics argue that this narrative choice may contribute to the erosion of the Black woman’s image and call for more diverse and empowering representations.

Despite the controversy, Henson expressed hope that the film inspires empathy in viewers and sheds light on the challenges faced by marginalized individuals.
