Melissa is keeping it 100% real about the current state of the music industry in Ghana.
The rising star recently sat down for a candid chat with OkayAfrica, where she opened up about her experience as an artist, the success of her hit track “Good Boy Kweku,” and why she believes the Ghanaian music scene needs to broaden its horizons.
When asked about how she feels existing within the local community, Melissa admitted she is craving more artistic freedom—not just for herself, but for her peers.
“I’m waiting for them to fully embrace our new sounds, if I’m being completely honest,” Melissa shared.
While she expressed deep gratitude for how well the public received “Good Boy Kweku“—noting that fans “took that one well, they loved it, they supported a lot”—she wants to see the audience show that same level of enthusiasm for alternative genres.
“I wish that we would get to a place where it’s way more supportive of alternative kinds of music, as opposed to what we know would work in Ghana,” she explained. “Just to broaden that horizon a bit.”
Melissa believes that a more open-minded audience would foster a much healthier, more experimental creative space. According to her, if fans embraced different styles, local artists would have the confidence to pivot into entirely new lanes—like R&B or even fusing traditional elements with heavier genres.
“Someone from there could be like, ‘I want to try rock,’ and it would work! It would now be like some Afro-rock type of thing,” she said. “To allow it to grow in that way, I would really love that.”
Despite her critique, Melissa made sure to note that she feels deeply supported by the community—especially when it comes to her fellow musicians. However, her ultimate goal is to see the general public unlock their ears to the unexpected.
“I do feel supported… there’s a lot of [support], especially with fellow artists,” she concluded. “It’s the people. I want the people to be open to different sounds as well. Because it will even let the current artists feel comfortable to try something new and know that it would be received.”
The timing for this conversation couldn’t be more perfect. Melissa is currently putting her money where her mouth is, as her highly anticipated debut EP, Diamond Baby, is out right now!
The 7-track project serves as a bold statement of arrival, showcasing her signature “Afro-Sexy” sound while effortlessly floating between feel-good Afrobeats, R&B, and dreamy pop. It features a star-studded lineup of collaborators, including Stonebwoy, Blaqbonez, Moliy, Joey B, and Grammy-winning producer Michael Brun.
What do you think? Are you ready to hear more alternative sounds coming out of Ghana? Have you streamed Diamond Baby yet?
